Museum of Neon Art, GAA meeting

The Museum of Neon Art, Glendale Art Association meeting is today, Thursday, March 14 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Citibank Building in Montrose.

The executive director of The Museum of Neon Art will share plans for the new Glendale-based facility and “Neon Cruise” bus tours that will commence in spring 2013. Information will also be given on this unique art form and the neon art’s rich history in the Los Angeles area.

Quilt Show this Weekend

The annual Glendale Quilt Show is March 15-17 at the Burbank Airport Marriott, 2500 Hollywood Way. It takes place on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is $10, parking $12. Husbands and children under 12 are free on Sunday.

Elks hosting car show

Annual charity car show to support children’s programs is being held at the Elk’s Lodge, 120 E. Colorado St. , Glendale on Sunday, March 17 starting at 9 a.m. Over 125 cars on display plus a raffle, auction, DJ and food. Public is welcome.

 


College extends gallery hours

Glendale Community College gallery hours have been extended. Currently on display is work from the college’s Architecture Dept.

The new gallery hours are Monday and Wednesday noon to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 7:30 p.m. and now new hours on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The third annual student projects exhibition continues through March 28 and includes the work of Sevan Barseghian, Erik Lieu, Jesus Gaytan, Nareg Ghazarian and Lila Montero. Featured is the International Student Competition Project from the Tokyo Replay Center.

VHHF Hosting lunch, bingo The Women’s Council of Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation (VHHF) will host lunch and bingo on Friday, March 15 at VHH (in Council Rooms A/D located on the fourth floor lobby). The event begins at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $30 per person (includes lunch and one bingo card). Additional bingo cards are available at two for $5. On Saturday, March 23 at 2 p.m., the Associates of Brand Library will be sponsoring the second concert in its annual music series. The Elixir Piano Trio will be performing the “Trio Op 66” by Mendelssohn, “Tangos” by Piazzolla and the “Adagio” by Khachaturian. Crescenta Cañada Dems

The March meeting of the Crescenta Cañada Democratic Club is on Sunday, March 17 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the home of Chuck and Maria Guinta at 5609 Stardust Road in La Cañada Flintridge.

Guest speaker is Robert Haw, co-founder, Pasadena Chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby. The topic is Are You Ready for More Wild Weather?

DAY AT THE RACES

On Sunday, March 17 beginning at 11 a.m., Crescenta Valley Day at the Races takes place at Santa Anita Racetrack. Cost is $25 adults, $15 under age 17. Alzheimer’s Research Presented at Mountview

A researcher from the USC Memory Loss and Aging Center will present information to Mountview Retirement Home in Montrose on Tuesday, March 19 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on the four U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medications that are being used to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Attendees will hear about how these medications work, who they benefit and the latest research on new and improved treatments for Alzheimer’s.

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC

Glendale Noon Concerts is a free admission concert series taking place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10 p.m. to12:40 p.m. in the restored chapel and sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Glendale (downtown at Louise & Wilson, no religious affiliation).

The next concert is on March 20 and features violinist Jacqueline Suzuki and pianist Rosa LoGiudice. They will commemorate the Centenary of composer Benjamin Britten and perform the “Chausson Poeme.”

AMERICAN GIRL FASHION SHOW FUNDRAISER

BEGINNINGS CLASSES AT VHH

The Verdugo Hills Hospital BEGINNINGS Family Education Program will offer a babysitting class designed on March 23 and April 27 for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 15. Each class is a single, one-time class, held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The babysitting class is an interactive course that teaches participants valuable skills, including infant/child CPR, basic first aid, home/auto safety, accident prevention, telephone skills, safety tips, when to call 911, poison control, fire/earthquake plans and other helpful childcare advice. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a babysitting course completion certificate.

Classes are offered at VHH, located at 1812 Verdugo Blvd. in Glendale, 91208 in the Council Room (located on the fourth floor).

Home tour hosted by lanterman foundation

The Lanterman Foundation will be hosting a home tour of Chula Vista, a 1929 Spanish Colonial Revival masterpiece located at 1937 Orchard Lane, La Cañada designed by Charles Kyson on Sunday, March 24 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.  Built for Charles Hoag, this “showplace of the Valley” retains its original architectural integrity, its richly ornamental interiors and many of its original gardens.

Significant Homes part of Pasadena Heritage tour

Join Pasadena Heritage for a peek into the past during the 2013 spring lecture and home tour, Before the Bungalow. Pasadena is a city known not only for its social and cultural history, but for its remarkable collection of architecture from different periods and styles as well. On Saturday, March 23, take a look at the very early development of Pasadena and the first residential architecture built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Following the lecture from noon to 4 p.m. will be a drive-yourself tour of four significant homes of the period.

Caregiver Burnout: Finding Refuge

Medicare Education at VHH

Verdugo Hills Hospital (VHH) is offering a free Medicare Educational Seminar on Tuesday, March 26 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the hospital’s Council Rooms B/D, located on the fourth floor lobby. Lunch will be served.

The seminar will help new Medicare patients with their questions about benefits and types of health plans available to them. CPR CLASSES AT VHH

As an American Heart Association training center, Verdugo Hills Hospital (VHH) offers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training classes to community members and healthcare providers. For community members, VHH offers the Heartsaver AED class. This class is designed for the layperson. It provides instruction in adult, child and infant CPR and the choking maneuver for all three as well.  Also taught is the AED (automated external defibrillator) as these devices are now located in many public areas. This class is offered once each month with future classes being held on April 10 and May 22.

Edkins Headlines Caltech Jazz Bands Performance

The Caltech Jazz Bands, directed by William Bing, present their 13th Annual Jazz Festival featuring soloist Kirsten Edkins. This event will take place on Saturday, April 13 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Gates Annex Patio on the Caltech campus. Gates Patio is located just west of Dabney Lounge.

 Saxophonist Edkins, who graduated from the prestigious Eastman School of Music, has performed with Arturo Sandoval, Albert “Tootie” Heath, Geoffrey Keezer and popular artists Carrie Underwood, Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson.

Other featured musicians at the Caltech Jazz Festival include guitarist Glenn Hair, the Nick Broten Band, Chris Rolontz, Zucky Zeidner, and the Caltech Jazz Band.

 Admission is free and no tickets are required. Some seating will be provided and audience members are welcome to bring food and blankets for a picnic on the lawn.

Black Rose to play at St. Luke’s – Monrovia

SIERRA CLUB PLANS CHINA TRIP

FIRST CVHS CLASS OF ’63 PLANS 50-YEAR REUNION

A 50-year reunion is being planned by the members of the first class to graduate from Crescenta Valley High in 1963.

The “First and the Best” will celebrate June 22-23 at Angeles National Golf Club nestled at the base of the Angeles National Forest just 15 minutes from Burbank Airport and numerous hotels.

Area residents might remember when the “old” Clark Junior High campus was converted into a high school in the fall of 1960, and there was only a sophomore class.  Those students were the first to graduate from the new high school, and they established the school mascot, school colors, school song (written by class faculty advisor Shirley Nute) and many other traditions.

FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

FREE INCOME TAX PREPARATION

Residents can receive free income tax preparation under the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program provided through AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, a tax-exempt charity of AARP.  Membership in AARP is not required.

Free income tax preparation can be obtained at La Crescenta County Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd. (corner of La Crescenta Avenue) through Friday, April 12 except for April 5.  Enter from the upper level parking lot.

The hours are Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Taxpayers will be helped on a “first-come-first-served” basis; no advanced reservations are available.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly infant lactation and development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
