“The Who’s Tommy” – an Tony award winning rock musical with music and lyrics by Pete Townshend and based on a 1969 rock opera by the Who, is back on stage in Hollywood at the Pantages Theater now through Nov. 15.
High marks go to the revival’s creative visuals and clever stage design, excellent choreography and brisk pacing and an iconic score featuring timeless tunes such as “Pinball Wizard” and “See Me, Feel Me.” Add to that the generally strong performances, including newcomer Collin Flanagan’s deft portrayal of Tommy Walker – a deaf, mute and blind boy who becomes a pinball sensation – and Kris Lyons, who kills it as the Acid Queen in her national tour debut, no less.
On the debit side are the dark themes of childhood trauma that some might find difficult to digest, and the lack of an intermission. But the two-hour show flies by. It’s an energetic and audience-pleasing mix of sight and sound.
