The Free Admission Glendale Noon Concerts (GNC) series features live performances at the sanctuary of Glendale City Church, 610 E. California Ave. in Glendale.

On Nov. 4, GNC features pianist Brendan White performing a solo piano recital featuring selections from Années de pèlerinage by Franz Liszt (Hungarian, 1811-1886). These include: Sursum Corda (Lift up your hearts, 1883), Sonetto 47 del Petrarca (1858), Aux cyprès de la Villa d’Este I: Thrénodie (1883), Les jeux d’eaux à la Villa d’Este (1883) and Tarantella (1858).
The title refers to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novels Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship and Wilhelm Meister’s Journeyman Years (Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre, translated into French as Années de pèlerinage).
Much of the material grew out of his earlier collection Album d’un voyageur (1835–1838) written during his travels in Switzerland and Italy with the Countess Marie d’Agoult.
The pieces in the second volume (published in 1858) explore Italian literature and culture. Dating from late in Liszt’s life, the pieces published in 1883 displayed harmonic experimentation, introspection, religious contemplation and his late style.
