On Oct. 22, USC Verdugo Hills Hospital (USC-VHH) hosted Girl Talk, a free community event bringing together attendees and specialists from Keck Medicine of USC for an informative discussion on breast health, breast cancer screening and early detection in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“One of the most valuable things about Girl Talk is the opportunity to connect with women in the community with local experts, hear their questions and address

concerns they may not always have the chance to discuss,” said Amanda Woodworth, MD, director of breast health with Keck Medicine of USC and creator of the Girl Talk series. “We want every attendee to leave feeling informed, supported and empowered to prioritize their health.”

Moderated by Woodworth, the program featured a panel of Keck Medicine specialists who discussed common breast cancer myths, screening recommendations, prevention and treatment. Panelists included Emma Koesters, MD, plastic and reconstructive surgeon; Maria Nelson, MD, surgical breast oncologist; Danielle Sterrenberg, MD, medical oncologist and hematologist; and Michelle Wu, MD, radiologist.

The event opened with a guided breath work practice led by Stefanie Solomon, DPT, a physical therapist with USC-VHH. The practice encouraged participants

to release tension and reconnect with their bodies before the discussion.

The physician-led discussion included a live question-and-answer session with attendees submitting questions on cards to engage directly with specialists, learn about different aspects of breast care and address their concerns in an open, supportive environment.

Woodworth created Girl Talk to make important health information more accessible and help women feel comfortable discussing topics related to their well-being.

Over the past four years, she has led more than 20 Girl Talk events at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, USC Arcadia Hospital and USC-VHH.

Through community programs such as Girl Talk, USC-VHH continues to connect community members with trusted medical experts and resources to support informed decisions about their health.
