LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Praises ‘Poppins’

As I settled into [my seat as part of] the audience at Highlands Church, I was transported into the enchanting world of Mr. and Mrs. Banks, skillfully portrayed by Kyle Critelli and Rebecca Allfrey, alongside their spirited pre-teen children Michael and Jane, brought to life by Owen Laing and Hazel Hassler.

The story unfolds with Mr. Banks navigating his frustrations at home and work, leading to a delightful solution: hiring a nanny. But not just any nanny – this is where we meet the extraordinary Mary Poppins, beautifully embodied by Lissette Garrido.

The production was a fusion of captivating songs and vibrant dance routines. Directed by the talented Carter Thomas, who also shines as Bert, the charming chimney sweeper, the play captivates the audience for its full two-and-a-half-hour duration. The actors envelop us in their performances with mesmerizing dance and song that truly elevate the experience. Kyle Critelli and Rebecca Allfrey brilliantly illustrate the trials of parenthood while navigating the challenges of their time. Both Hazel Hassler (Jane Banks) and Owen Laing (Michael Banks) deliver outstanding performances as the siblings, immersing themselves in the imaginative world that Mary Poppins creates. The floating umbrella and vibrant kites add a magical touch, leaving everyone spellbound by the stunning scenery.

I was particularly captivated by Dynell Lee’s portrayal of the Bird Woman, which added depth to the narrative.

As you journey into the world of George Banks, prepare to gain insight into the struggles families face while raising children. Most importantly, don’t be surprised if you find yourself humming or singing along to these incredible tunes.

If you love musicals, I wholeheartedly recommend this extraordinary production of “Mary Poppins” running until Aug. 27. And added thanks to the amazing production crew and staff for creating this wonderful play for the enjoyment of the community.
