July 4 Parade: Celebrating America’s 250 Years

With the theme of “Celebrating Our 250 Years,” Sunland-Tujunga’s annual summer parade is set for Saturday, July 4 at 10 a.m. The parade, which is sponsored by the Sunland-Tujunga Rotary Club, will begin at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Summitrose Street then continue down Foothill, ending at Sunland Park.

This year’s grand marshal is decorated military veteran Paul Pangburn, a longtime member and current chaplain of local American Legion Post 377.

The July 4 parade, which typically draws around 5,000 spectators, will open with a crowd pleasing exhibition presented by the LAPD Motorcycle Drill Team.

Following will be a variety of both new and traditional entries, many of which are sponsored by the Sunland Recreation Center and local community organizations. Spectators can look forward to imaginative entries including whimsically decorated floats, synchronized cheer groups, sports teams, Sunland’s “Oldest Rock,” and classic cars including Evan Kifedjian in his tiny garbage truck.

It is important to note that this parade is a “dry parade.” For the safety of both participants and spectators, waterworks will not be allowed. There will be no water balloons, super soakers, squirt guns or water-spewing devices of any kind allowed along the parade route.

To help ensure a safe parade experience for everyone, Foothill Boulevard will be closed from Apperson Street to Fenwick Street. Westbound traffic will be diverted on Plainview Avenue and will be directed to continue on Hillrose Street. Eastbound traffic will be diverted onto Newhome Avenue and will be directed to continue on Apperson Street. All streets intersecting Foothill between Apperson and Fenwick will be barricaded to prevent vehicular access.

For those interested, there is still time to sign up for the parade. The Rotary Club encourages creative floats and the more the merrier.
