In recognition of June being Women’s Health Month, Dignity Health is highlighting Cocina con Corazón (Cooking with Heart), a culturally rooted cooking and wellness series that connects everyday nutrition with long-term heart health.
Heart disease remains a leading health concern for women, yet many risk factors are influenced by daily habits – including nutrition. In fact, studies show that following a variety of healthy eating patterns can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease by 14-21%. Cocina con Corazón addresses this through a community-centered approach, using familiar meals and cultural traditions to introduce small, realistic ingredient swaps that support heart-conscious living.
“During Women’s Health Month, we’re focused on empowering women with knowledge that fits into their everyday lives,” said Veronica Carmona, CDCES, RD Diabetes and Nutrition Program coordinator with Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital. “Through Cocina con Corazón, we’re showing that heart health doesn’t require drastic changes – it can begin with simple, thoughtful choices in the kitchen.”
The series features local chef-influencers and Dignity Health registered dietitians who demonstrate how traditional recipes can be prepared with balance in mind – supporting cardiovascular wellness while maintaining the flavors families know and love.
By centering on food, culture and accessibility, the program reinforces that prevention is not limited to clinical settings. Instead, it begins at home through everyday meals that contribute to long-term well-being.
