IN BRIEF

Independence Day Parade – Cancelled

Due to cuts in the budget for the City of Los Angeles, the Sunland-Tujunga Rotary Club will not be able to bring the 4th of July Parade to the community this year.

Representatives with the Sunland-Tujunga Rotary Club have been communicating with various staff in the City of Los Angeles about the situation. Cuts in the city’s budget from the mayor’s office meant that city services are no longer provided free of charge for First Amendment events, such as the parade, and sponsoring organizations need to pay for city services that ensure a safe event.

In the case of the Sunland-Tujunga Rotary Club, the initial estimate from the Dept. of Transportation came to $14,000 and the second estimate, including barricades, signage and other items needed for this specific event, came to almost $20,000. This is over four times what is normally budgeted for the entire parade. Representatives with the Sunland-Tujunga Rotary Club will continue to work with the City of Los Angeles to be able to host the parade in the future.
