SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

Question: Given the widespread discontent in everyday life today, attending an organized religious service (church, synagogue, etc.) seems like a waste of time, especially for the younger generation. What do you think people of today can get out of organized religion and attending service/s? Dealing with Discontent

Answer: Dear Dealing,

One thing, perhaps the greatest thing, a person can get from attending in person services is community. Where can you go to share elevating ideas, smiles, hugs and snacks with those who are in the mood to do the same?

So many places we go have nice people but the encounters are too brief and inconsistent to be as nourishing and healing as a weekly gathering that you know you can come to and be a part of.

At Temple Beth Emet in Burbank, for example, we have so much fun that people of all ages sit around after the service still enjoying the camaraderie and good feelings. There is interaction across age and gender differences.

Being a part of a community is rare in our time. After COVID, so many opportunities for fellowship went the way of the horse and buggy. The synagogue or church where you feel welcomed can fill the gap to add much needed socialization to our everyday lives!
