NOTES & NODS

LCIF Final Soup Supper

Lutheran Church in the Foothills (LCIF) invites local women to connect and reflect during its upcoming “Women Gather” Bible study on Tuesday, March 24. The session begins at 1 p.m. in the church’s conference room. The group meets twice a month to discuss Scripture and share personal insights. No RSVP is required to attend and newcomers are welcome to join at any time.

In addition, LCIF welcomes all to attend its final Wednesday evening soup supper on March 25 during this season of Lent. Meet in the fellowship hall at 6 p.m. for a hearty bowl of soup as well as bread and dessert. A worship service follows at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. The Wednesday evenings services provide a quiet space for contemplation and prayer. Lent is the 40-day period during which Christians remember the events leading up to and including the death of Jesus Christ. Lent is a time of reflection and asking for forgiveness. Ultimately, it is a preparation to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection at the feast of Easter.

LCIF’s regular Sunday worship continues to be held at 10 a.m. led by Pastor Viv Vega. Children are invited to participate in Children’s Church, offered at the same time, which includes a Bible lesson, crafts and games.

For more information about all activities at LCIF, please visit the church’s website: lcifoothills.org. Those who need pastoral care can email office@lcifoothills.org or call (818) 790-1951.

The church is located at 1700 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada Flintridge. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Stillwater Returns to UUCVH

UUCVH (Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills) welcomes JD Stillwater back to the pulpit on March 22 for his sermon “This is Not My Beautiful House.” One of our culture’s foundational myths is about ownership, security and permanence. In the natural world and indigenous cultures, these are aberrations! Stillwater will offer a bit of science, some personal experiences, and a Talking Heads song as puzzle pieces toward a new, more vulnerable humility grounded in stewardship instead of ownership.

JD Stillwater is a science ambassador on a mission to promote science as an interfaith source of profound inspiration and cultural shift. After classroom teaching for 25 years, Stillwater shares his awe and wonder of nature with global audiences, and the spiritual depth available from a science-based worldview.

In person at 10:30 a.m. at 4451 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta or visit the UUCVH website for the Zoom link https://www.uuverdugo.org/.

Participants will walk for the first hour and then gather to read a selection of Scripture. About a half hour will be spent journaling about what was read and then there will be conversation, sharing thoughts.

Participants are asked to bring something to write with, anything wanted to eat or drink, and a chair to use for the writing part of the morning. Because people will be outdoors and social distancing will be practiced, masks will be optional.
