Over the recent President’s Day weekend, the vibrant sounds and traditions of Greece took center stage at the 49th Annual Greek Orthodox Folk Dance and Choral Festival (FDF). Among the hundreds of participants from across the Western United States were six local students who traveled to downtown Phoenix to represent Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church.
The students – Peter James, Leonidas Vasiliou, Dimitri Pitsos, Christopher Spears, Katerina Vasiliou and Olivia Spears – performed as members of the “Kyklonakia” dance group in the intermediate category.
The performance in the Sheraton Phoenix Ballroom was the culmination of a rigorous journey that began in August 2025. For the past seven months, the 27-member team dedicated themselves to weekly practices, dress rehearsals and the study of traditional music and movement. Their showcase featured authentic dances from various regions of Greece, requiring not only physical stamina but also a deep respect for historical accuracy and discipline.
Beyond the competition, the festival serves a higher purpose. As one of the largest gatherings of its kind, FDF provides a dedicated space for young people to strengthen their faith and honor their ancestral heritage. The four-day event is designed to foster lasting relationships rooted in service and shared identity.
By standing together on stage, the members of Kyklonakia demonstrated the power of teamwork and the importance of preserving cultural traditions for the next generation. The weekend concluded as a celebration of the youth’s hard work, talent and the enduring friendships formed through their shared commitment to the arts.
