Oct. 27, 1936 – Feb. 10, 2026
Marvin Elton Owen, 89, entered the arms of his Lord and Savior on Feb. 10 in Owensboro, Kentucky surrounded by his family. He was born Oct. 27, 1936 in Evansville, Indiana to Marvin Luther Owen and Emma Augusta (Kunath) Owen. Marvin moved to Los Angeles in 1957 where he made his home for 60 years, but he never forgot his lifelong friends from Bosse High School Class of ’55. Marvin had a fulfilling 28-year career as a firefighter with the Glendale Fire Dept. where he was affectionately known as “Marvelous Marv” and he served as a medic for eight years in the U.S. Navy Reserve followed by two years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.
Marvin was a man of faith, love, determination and hard work, who was passionate about giving his life to make the world a better place. He sacrificially and generously served others with his time, resources and many talents. He volunteered in his churches, on mission trips, on federal, state and local initiatives, and he was always ready to lend a hand to family, friends and even strangers in need. He loved well and those who knew him loved him deeply.
Marvin was a lifelong learner who, with the heart of a retired fire captain, was known for encouraging others to strive to reach their fullest potential as well. And he loved to have fun whether it was traveling, driving – both off-road and on – dancing, singing or enjoying special moments with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Mary (Hoffmann) Owen; children Jenifer Mullineaux (Jon), Susan Rowe (David), Jeffrey Owen (Denise) and Deborah Owen (David Burns); and many much-loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and a grandson.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Cedarhurst Assisted Living and all of the doctors, nurses, OTs, PTs, and SLPs who helped Marvin fight valiantly these last few years, all the way to the end.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 7 at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro, Kentucky with visitation prior to the service from 1-3 p.m. Live streaming and opportunities to send online messages of condolences are available at www.davisfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, please follow Marvin’s example by saying a kind word or doing a good deed for someone in need; in addition, donations may be made to Firefighters for Christ International.
