LCIF Events
As the calendar turns to 2026, Lutheran Church in the Foothills (LCIF) is inviting the community to step into the New Year with a focus on fellowship, spiritual growth and a renewed love for reading. The church has announced the return of two of its most popular monthly gatherings: the Women’s Gather Bible Study and the LCIF Book Club. The Bible study group is set to resume its twice-monthly schedule, offering local women a consistent place to reflect and connect. The first meetup of the year will take place on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. in the church’s conference room. All are welcome to attend and no RSVP is required.
For those who have added “read more” to their list of 2026 resolutions, the LCIF Book Club offers the perfect opportunity to stay on track. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. The group will gather to discuss “The Last Christmas in Paris” by Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb. The novel tells the story of a young woman in London and a soldier on the Western Front whose friendship blossoms into love through their letters during the long years of World War I.
In February, members will dive into “The Book Club for Troublesome
Women” by Marie Bostwick.
In addition, LCIF welcomes all to attend its weekly Sunday worship service at 10 a.m. with Pastor Viv Vivek. Children are invited to participate in Children’s Church, offered at the same time, that includes a Bible lesson, crafts and games.

Ru-Lee Weller-Passman at UUCVH
Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills (UUCVH) will host author and tarot practitioner Ru-Lee Weller-Passman on Jan. 11 at 10:30 a.m. for the sermon titled “Embracing the Fool.” It’s the season of new beginnings and fresh starts.
In a tarot reading, the card for this moment would be the Fool. There may be preconceived notions of what a fool looks and acts like, but the Fool card is actually about diving into new situations with headlong enthusiasm. How can some of that Fool energy be cultivated as people settle into 2026?
Weller-Passman (they/them) is a future Unitarian Universalist chaplain and recurring speaker at the church. Author of “Your Tarot Toolkit,” UUCVH welcomes them back by popular demand. In person at 10:30 a.m. (Pacific) at 4451 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta or visit the UUCVH website https://www.uuverdugo.org/ for the Zoom link.

Walk and Word
Walk and Word participants will meet in the parking lot of Deukmejian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Road in La Crescenta/Glendale at 8 a.m. on Jan. 12, 19 & 26. Participants will walk for the first hour and then gather to read a selection of Scripture. About a half hour will be spent journaling about what was read and then there will be conversation, sharing thoughts.
Participants are asked to bring something to write with, anything wanted to eat or drink, and a chair to use for the writing part of the morning. Because people will be outdoors and social distancing will be practiced, masks will be optional.
Those with questions can email Jeanne at jnlavieri@earthlink.net.
All are welcome. If the hike is too strenuous, there are level paths at the park. There are ramps from the parking lot to the field where the group gathers after the hike.
