On Oct. 1, USC Verdugo Hills Hospital (USC-VHH) hosted “Girl Talk: Breast Health & Empowerment,” a special community event in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Women of all ages gathered in an open, supportive environment to engage in meaningful conversations about breast health and cancer awareness.
Designed to educate and empower, the program featured physician-led presentations and a live Q&A session, offering attendees the opportunity to ask questions and engage directly with specialists in various aspects of breast care.
The event was moderated by Amanda Woodworth, MD, director of breast health with Keck Medicine of USC and a member of the American Cancer Society National Breast Cancer Roundtable Steering Committee. She was joined by a panel of Keck Medicine experts including Emma Koesters, MD, plastic and reconstructive surgeon; Maria Nelson, MD, surgical breast oncologist; Danielle Sterrenberg, MD, medical oncologist and hematologist; and Michelle Wu, MD, radiologist.
Discussion topics included breast cancer screening guidelines, prevention and risk-reduction strategies, treatment and recovery options and the latest advancements in diagnostic imaging and oncology.
The interactive format encouraged open dialogue among both panelists and attendees, and provided personalized insights, creating a valuable experience for community members seeking support and clarity around breast health.
“By hosting events like ‘Girl Talk,’ we’re reinforcing our commitment to community education and outreach,” said Marie Filipian, MPH, community benefit manager with USC-VHH. “Providing direct access to trusted medical experts helps raise awareness around prevention, early detection and the evolving treatment options available to those affected by breast cancer.”
