Lutheran Church Hosts Community Trunk Or Treat
Children can give their Halloween costumes a trial run as Lutheran
Church in the Foothills (LCIF) holds its annual trunk or treat festival on Sunday, Oct. 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For LCIF, the goal is simple: offer a secure, daytime environment where parents and their children can enjoy the festive fun. The central attraction of the community festival is the parade of creatively decorated car trunks, ranging from cartoon scenes to spooky (but kid-appropriate) displays. Owners will distribute treats directly from their decorated vehicles, ensuring a high density of candy stops with minimal walking. In addition to the sweet treats, the festival will feature a variety of games and, a large bounce house to burn off some of that pre-Halloween energy. Everyone is also welcome to attend LCIF’s 10 a.m. worship service before the event, led by Pastor Viv Vega.
LCIF would also like to remind the community of its upcoming book club meeting on Monday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. in the church’s conference room. Book lovers will discuss “Jacqueline in Paris” by Ann Mah. The book club selection for November is “Where They Last Saw Her” by Marcie Rendon. All are welcome to attend.
Visit lcifoothills.org for event details, including small group gatherings and opportunities to serve. For more information or to request/offer help, email office@lcifoothills.org or call (818) 790-1951. The church is located at 1700 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada Flintridge. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
UUCVH Welcomes Cesar Cordona
On Oct. 19 recurring guest speaker Cesar Cordona is welcomed back to the pulpit at UUCVH (Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills) for his talk Stillness Before Serving: Finding Calm in Chaos. Stillness Before Serving begins at 10:30 a.m. at 4451 Dunsmore Ave., La Crescenta or visit the UUCVH website for the Zoom link https://www.uuverdugo.org/.
Holy Craft
The community is invited on Sundays at 11 a.m. starting Oct. 21 in the sanctuary foyer of La Cañada Congregational Church. Bring a craft project and supplies along with a snack to share. Attendees will find seasoned knitters, procrastinating gift makers and curious learners coming together to make something beautiful (even if it’s just conversation). It’s a great way to share a skill, learn a new one (supplies provided) and find new friendships.

Mt. Olive Lutheran Church invites the Crescenta Valley community to its annual trunk or treat event on Oct. 25 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.. There will be decorated cars and trucks (and decorated parishioners in costumes of all sorts!) for children and families to enjoy as they trick-or-treat their way around the church lot. There will also be special baked goods, cotton candy and a variety of games!

In addition, there will be a Liturgy of Confirmation as a part of that worship service on Oct. 26 when the worshipers and those being confirmed will join together in publicly affirming their holy baptism and Christian faith.
And don’t forget that Mt. Olive holds a monthly breakfast Bible study at Panera Bread Restaurant, 990 Town Center Drive, Suite A in La Cañada on the third Saturday of each month at 8:30 a.m. [Please Note: This month’s breakfast Bible study took place on the second Saturday, Oct. 11, at the usual meeting time.] This Bible study is currently in the Book of Second Corinthians. Also, a weekly Bible study (currently in the Book of Genesis) is held at the church on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m.

Walk and Word
Walk and Word participants will meet in the parking lot of Deukmejian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Road in La Crescenta/Glendale at 8 a.m. on Oct. 19 & 26. Participants will walk for the first hour and then gather to read a selection of Scripture. About a half hour will be spent journaling about what was read and then there will be conversation, sharing thoughts.
Participants are asked to bring something to write with, anything wanted to eat or drink, and a chair to use for the writing part of the morning. Because people will be outdoors and social distancing will be practiced, masks will be optional.
Those with questions can email Jeanne at jnlavieri@earthlink.net.
All are welcome. If the hike is too strenuous, there are level paths at the park. There are ramps from the parking lot to the field where the group gathers after the hike.
