Striking the Right Note: A Local Teen Shines at International Stages

Astghik Grigoryan, a rising sophomore at La Cañada High School, returned home from Salzburg and  Barcelona as a first prize winner of the Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition. During the winners’ recital in two of Europe’s iconic musical cities, she represented both nations she calls her own: Armenia and the United States of America. 

Grigoryan’s musical journey began at the age of 6 when she became a student at Lark  Musical Society in Glendale. Under the guidance of the music teacher Svetlana  Kazaryan, Grigoryan honed her piano skills and musicianship to perfection. More than that, she developed a deep love and profound appreciation for classical music that continues to inspire her. In addition to piano, Grigoryan expanded her musical horizons at Lark, exploring instruments such as drums and hand chimes. She also nurtured her vocal talents as a member of the Tsiatsan Choir throughout her studies at Lark. 

Outside of Lark, Grigoryan has participated and earned top awards at numerous prestigious state and international music programs and competitions. She is a five-time award winner at the Junior Bach Festival organized by the Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC). She is a two-time recipient of the State Honor Award completing the advanced level of the MTAC Certificate of Merit program, further showcasing her talent and dedication. Grigoryan is also an Absolute First Prize tier winner with the recognition for the Best Bach Performance Special Award at the Bach International Festival, UK; second prize winner and the Audience Favorite  Award recipient at the Charleston International Music Competition; silver award winner at the  Global Young Musicians Competition; silver award recipient at the Mozart International Music Competition; first prize winner at the Golden Classical Music Awards International Competition; and first prize winner at the Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition of Salzburg and Barcelona.
