LASD Homicide Bureau Responded to a Missing Persons with Suspected Foul Play

From the LASD:

On Aug. 12, [Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept.]-Lancaster Station took a missing person report on Sheylla Cabrera, a 33-year-old female. During Lancaster Station’s follow-up investigation on Aug. 13, it discovered additional video surveillance of the missing person’s husband dragging a large object in a large piece of material from the apartment complex in the 500 block of Lancaster Boulevard, where the missing person, her husband and three young sons lived. Based on additional information, it suspected foul play may have been involved with the missing person and notified the Homicide Bureau. Homicide investigators responded to the scene and started conducting their investigation, which is currently ongoing. In addition to Sheylla, her three children were also entered into the missing persons system.

Through the extensive, ongoing investigation on Aug. 13, the investigator immediately called in the Altadena and Montrose search and rescue teams, whose members immediately started searching large areas of the Angeles National Forest.

The investigator also worked in conjunction with the Mexican General Consulate and the Peruvian General Consulate with alerts for the person of interest in this case – Jossimar Cabrera, a 36-year-old male. The investigators were informed the person of interest had already fled from the United States.

On Aug. 16, the three children were found safe and taken into protective custody in Peru.

On the same day, investigators were contacted shortly after 10 a.m. by the Montrose Search and Rescue team, which reported team members had spotted an object similar to the material that was seen being taken away by the person of interest over the side of an embankment in the Angeles National Forest. An investigator responded to the scene and it was discovered that the material contained the body of Sheylla Cabrera, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. The official cause of death will be determined by the Los Angles County Medical Examiner’s Office.

This case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for its consideration of filing murder charges against Jossimar Cabrera and obtaining the necessary documents to secure his return to the United States. Cabrera is currently believed to be in Peru, pending further investigation needed to bring him to justice.
