Josephine Woodruff of La Crescenta graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, with a major in psychology.

Bates College graduated students from 36 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and 19 countries, with 437 members of the Class of 2024 accepting congratulations and diplomas from President Garry W. Jenkins.

Located in Lewiston, Maine, and home to about 1,800 students, Bates is internationally recognized as a leading liberal arts college attracting 2,000 students from across the U.S. and around the world. The following local residents were named to Clark University’s spring 2024 dean’s list: Oliver E. Briskin was named to first honors and Karina H. Fischman was named to first honors. Both are from La Crescenta.

Emerson College awarded approximately 1,045 undergraduate degrees to the Class of 2024 during the 144th commencement. Samuel Kellman from Glendale 91208 received a BA in media arts production.

Jacob Smissen of La Crescenta graduated from Linfield University following the spring 2024 semester. Smissen earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing.

Following the spring 2024 semester, the university awarded 510 degrees to 505 graduates, with five awarded double degrees. Commencement celebrated 445 undergraduates and 65 graduate-level students.

For undergraduate students, honors include summa cum laude (3.9-4.0 cumulative GPA), magna cum laude (3.8-3.89 cumulative GPA) and cum laude (3.65-3.79 cumulative GPA). Graduate students earn honors or high honors for earning a GPA of 3.8-3.89 and 3.9-4.0, respectively.

Linfield University is an independent, nonprofit university with campuses in McMinnville and Portland, Oregon, as well an eCampus for online learning. Since 1858, Linfield has connected a traditional liberal arts experience with practical education through 54 majors, including wine studies, sport management and nursing. Lina Urquiza of Glendale was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Urquiza was initiated at University of Southern California.

Urquiza is among approximately 20,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10% of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the Society has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States, its territories and the Philippines.

Bianca Gonzalez of Tujunga has been named to Southern New Hampshire University’s (SNHU) summer 2024 dean’s list. The summer terms run from May to August.

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.500 to 3.699 for the reporting term are named to the dean’s list.

Dasol Lee of La Crescenta and Daniel Wood Corella of Tujunga were added to the summer 2024 president’s list. Full-time undergraduate students who earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above for the reporting term are named to the president’s list.

Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired eight-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.
