Hundreds of photos, fascinating information and history, plus video will be presented. Wilkes has been an active promoter and historian in ragtime since the 1970s with numerous accomplishments on both coasts.

Fire Danger Rating Lowered

Effective Jan. 11, Fire Management on the Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains National Monument downgraded the fire danger level from “very high” to “high.”

Winter rains have brought much needed precipitation to the southland raising fuel moisture levels across the forest. With more rain expected in the coming weeks, Angeles’ Fire Chief Robert Garcia said the additional rain is expected to aid firefighters should any new fires start.

County Votes to Expand ‘Mental Evaluation Teams’

To help prevent use-of-force incidents and improve outcomes for individuals with mental health issues, the LA County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion by Supervisors Kathryn Barger and Mark Ridley-Thomas that seeks to expand the number of Mental Evaluation Teams (MET teams) from 10 to 23.

MET teams consist of a mental health clinician paired with a sheriff’s deputy who respond to emergency calls involving psychiatric crisis or critical incidents and provide immediate assistance to those in need. Los Angeles County was the first in the nation to develop co-response teams as a pilot program in the early 1990s. Since MET service began in January 1993, the Dept. of Mental Health has partnered with 35 law enforcement agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Dept., to develop more than 80 co-response teams.
