Calling All Grouches
National Grouch Day is observed annually on Oct. 15. As per Merriam-Webster dictionary, a grouch is a person who complains frequently or constantly, a habitually irritable or complaining person.
All grouches are invited to help volunteers at Deukmejian Wilderness Park on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon with invasive weed removal and tree watering. There is work for all ages, abilities and grouches. Volunteers will get a smile on their face for their hard work.
Participants should wear sturdy shoes, protective clothing including long pants, hat and sun protection. Snacks will be provided.

Federal Career Day
The FBI – Los Angeles field office will host a career day on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Federal Building south parking lot in Los Angeles. This unique admission-free event is open to the public and will include recruiting teams from federal, military, state, regional and local law enforcement, the Dept. of Homeland Security and public service organizations. It will be a convenient and exciting way for those with an interest in law enforcement and public service careers to meet with a wide array of organizations and learn about current hiring procedures and job opportunities.
Many of the organizations will arrive with special vehicles, technology and gear in order to highlight their public service mission.

Rosemont Preserve Open Gate Afternoon
An “open gate” event is taking place at the Rosemont Preserve on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 16. This is a chance for residents to visit the Preserve and wander the trail at their own pace and enjoy the tranquil setting, the wildlife and the natural beauty. Stroll down the trail looking for animal tracks and see all the work that has been done in the outdoor classroom and demonstration garden.
The gate will be open from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and Friends of the Rosemont Preserve Committee members will be available to answer questions and present this community resource.
The Preserve is located at the north end of Rosemont Avenue, just past the chain link fence. As street parking is limited, please park at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave. Those planning on walking the trails should wear sturdy shoes.
This event is free to the public and suitable for all ages; no reservations required. Rain cancels. Sorry, no pets please.

Sign Up for Clean-up Day
The 21st Foothill Community Clean-up Day is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon on “Make a Difference Day.” To sign up to be a volunteer, visit www.goo.gl/Iq4Gzx. Note: Volunteers must pre-register by Monday, Oct. 17.
This service day provides the opportunity for students, families, service organizations, businesses and other groups to “make a difference” by sprucing up the foothill community.

Hoeptner Presenting at CV Historical Society
A photo of a primitive road leading to a pass in Holmes-Walton’s 1913 publicity brochure for its Montrose tract intrigued Fred Hoeptner. Could it be Verdugo Road? If so, where was it taken? Was it the beginning of the fabled Soledad Road?
Hoeptner’s search for the answer led to detailed study of maps and literature, including original sources. Some of his findings seemed to dispute conventional wisdom. His lecture at the monthly meeting Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley will be illustrated with maps and photos. College Food Pantry Dedication Planned
A dedication ceremony for the new Glendale Community College Food for Thought Pantry will be held on Oct. 18 at 4:15 p.m. at the San Rafael Plaza.
The pantry will supply food and hygiene items for students in need. Donations and volunteers will be a vital part of the services provided.
The GCC Food Pantry Task Force was created in July 2016 to understand food insecurity among GCC students, to increase awareness of hunger and poverty issues among the GCC community, and to provide food, hygiene supplies and poverty alleviation-related information to students in need.

Call For Artists
The City of Glendale Arts & Culture Commission is accepting proposals from artists to participate in its new program, “AHA! –Art Happens Anywhere!” Artists of all artistic genres, art organizations or schools may submit proposals intended for the public with pop-up art and engage people in social conversation.
AHA! is one of a roster of programs in the Arts & Culture Work Plan. Its specific purpose is to stimulate the public with non-traditional artwork, art experiences, and performances in unexpected public places. The artwork may be visual, musical, performance-based, social, experiential, environmental, or sensory – all delivery methods will be considered. The artwork may be a one-time event or installation, or it may be a series of events or installations. Artwork must not impede the public right-of-way or access by individuals with a disability.
