Notes & Nods

Lutheran Church to Host Events
Lutheran Church in the Foothills (LCIF) invites the community to a fun-filled evening of Bunco on Aug. 14 at 6 p.m. in the church’s Fellowship Hall. Bunco, a popular dice game known for its fast-paced and social nature, is a perfect way to connect with friends, old and new. The game involves simple rules that are easy to learn, making it accessible to players of all ages and skill levels. Bunco night is part of LCIF’s Wednesday Summer Fun program.

In addition to the Bunco event, LCIF is launching a new support group specifically designed for widows. The Surviving Widows group will hold its inaugural meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at noon. This gathering aims to provide a supportive space for women to share experiences, offer encouragement and find companionship during this challenging time. A nutritious meal will be provided to nourish both body and soul. Interested individuals can RSVP by contacting the church office. The gathering will take place at a private residence.

Visit lcifoothills.org for information on small group gatherings and opportunities to serve. For more information or to request/offer help, email office@lcifoothills.org or call (818) 790-1951. The church is located at 1700 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada Flintridge. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday.

UUCVH TO HOST HOLISTIC INDIGENOUS PRACTITIONER

On Sunday, Aug. 11 at 10:30 a.m. Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills will host a holistic indigenous practitioner in the presentation “The Washoe Peoples House.”

The Washoe, the original people of Tahoe Basin, are one of the last indigenous groups to be contacted. Today there are no Washoe gathering places in the Tahoe Basin specifically designated for Washoe spirituality and cultural teachings that are not linked to monetary gain and tourism. Dr. Ana Luna, executive assistant director of Washiw Zulshish Goom Tahn Nu (Washoe Warrior Society), will share the story of the Washoe people as they endeavor to construct a spiritual/cultural gathering house dedicated to ceremony, prayer and the cultural teachings of Wašišiw.

To join via Zoom or to attend in person, visit the UUCVH website to learn more: https://www.uuverdugo.org/.

Mt. Olive Offers Community Breakfast Bible Study

Mt. Olive Lutheran Church reminds the public that all are invited to its monthly breakfast Bible study at Panera Bread Restaurant, 990 Town Center Dr., Suite A in La Cañada on the third Saturday of each month at 8:30 a.m. The Book of Ephesians is currently being studied.

All are invited.

Walk and Word

Walk and Word participants will meet in the parking lot of Deukmejian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Road in La Crescenta/Glendale at 8 a.m. on Aug. 11, 18 & 25. Participants will walk for the first hour and then gather to read a selection of Scripture. About a half hour will be spent journaling about what was read and then there will be conversation, sharing thoughts.

Participants are asked to bring something to write with, anything wanted to eat or drink, and a chair to use for the writing part of the morning. Because people will be outdoors and social distancing will be practiced, masks will be optional.

Those with questions can email Jeanne at jnlavieri@earthlink.net.

All are welcome. If the hike is too strenuous, there are level paths at the park. There are ramps from the parking lot to the field where the group gathers after the hike.
