WHAT: Members of the local media and public are invited to attend a candlelight vigil for Joseph Gatto on the two-year anniversary of his still-unsolved murder. Attendees will gather at Tesla Park in Silver Lake and walk to the intersection of Bright Lane and West Silver Lake Drive to hold the vigil near Joseph Gatto’s home.
Joseph Gatto, the father of Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles), was murdered on November 12, 2013 at his home in Silver Lake. Gatto’s murder rocked the Silver Lake community. Unfortunately, no leads or breaks have yet to develop despite a $50,000 reward being offered for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the murderer.

WHY: Joe Gatto, a U.S. Army veteran, was a highly respected resident of Silver Lake. He was public-school arts teacher who touched thousands of lives as an artist, painter, photographer, award-winning jewelry designer, and author of several books on teaching art. According to family, friends, and co-workers, in 47-years of teaching, he never missed a day of work. His dedication and achievement earned him national recognition including the Bravo Award and the California Arts Teacher of the Year Award in 1986. A lifelong Democrat, he was honored at the White House by both Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
