Today we have the opportunity as a community to gather to remember the horrific events of 9/11/01. This we will do despite the sorrow, pain and – for many – rage it will reignite in us. But it’s important for us to remember, especially on this one day, so we can honor the many people who are reminded – daily – of their loss.

We are fortunate that we can gather together as one at the Remembrance Parade that starts at 9:11 this morning and also at Bob Smith Toyota tonight at 7 p.m. Along the parade route, residents are invited to step outside, wave a flag or just a hello to the classic cars that will make their way throughout the Crescenta Valley. I am fortunate to have been invited to take part and I will be riding in one of the cars provided by the Early Rodders car club. I look forward to seeing you either along the route or at Bob Smith Toyota tonight.

While it may be a blessing to have the chance to gather to mourn, it is also a blessing to be able to celebrate together. On Friday, we can celebrate La Crescenta 91214 on 9/12/14.

A once-in-a-century event, Celebrating La Crescenta 91214 reminds us of how fortunate we are to live in this foothills community. I have worked with civic leaders to identify some key spots in the area that are worthy of notice. These have been mapped out on page 9 along with a brief description of each place. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., many of these locations will be manned with someone who will share the history of the site. Many thanks to the La Crescenta Woman’s Club – one of the key places – that will be hosting refreshments from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Plan to stop by the Woman’s Club and the many other places around La Crescenta to celebrate 91214 on 9/12/14.

Finally, it is with little fanfare that the anniversary of the first issue of Crescenta Valley Weekly passed. The first issue was distributed on Sept. 4, 2009. For those keeping track, that was actually a Friday – the Station Fire and subsequent closure of many neighborhood roads prevented us from delivering the paper on Thursday, Sept. 3.

We’ve come a long way and with the support of our readers and advertisers I know the journey has just begun.

Thank you.
