Glendale Youth Orchestra Presents ‘Symphonic Adventures’

On Sunday, March 13, the Glendale Youth Orchestra, conducted by Henry Shin, will perform the second concert of the 33rd season at 6 p.m. at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale. The program is titled “Symphonic Adventures” and will feature a pair of the five 2022 concerto winners, “Beethoven Romance No. 2,” Angela Hernandez, violin; “Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1, 3 mvt,” Valerie Chen, violin. The concert will also be featuring the music of Schubert, Dvorak & Tchaikovsky.

The GYO is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Dept. of Arts and Culture.

Tickets are $18 and may be purchased from the Alex Theatre box office. Students, children and seniors may purchase tickets for $16 each. The Alex Theatre is located at 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale. For more information, visit www.alextheatre.org

Known for his “keen sense of timing, charisma, and leadership,” Henry Shin is steadily building a reputation as one of the most versatile conductors of his generation. Since 2015, Shin also serves as director of orchestras at Pasadena City College. A strong proponent of bringing music to underserved youth in Los Angeles, he is the music director and conductor of the nationally acclaimed Harmony Project Orchestras, Hollywood, the Valley Philharmonic Orchestra in Porter Ranch, and with the Kadima Conservatory Philharmonic in Pacoima. Shin was appointed music director and conductor of the GYO in 2019.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Berkeley, a master’s degree in conducting from the USC Flora L. Thornton School of Music and is currently completing his doctoral studies at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.

Soloist Valerie Chen, 14 years old, started playing the violin at the age of 8. Since then, she has been awarded top prizes in several competitions. She was the gold medalist of the Southern California Junior Bach Complete Work Competition and received a scholarship from the Friends of William Grant Still Arts Center. Recently, she made her concerto debut at the age of 14, performing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra.

Soloist Angela Hernandez, GYO

Soloist Angela Hernandez, 15, has been playing the violin since she was 5. She is a sophomore at Bravo Medical Magnet High School. She has been studying for over 10 years with GYO alumna Grace Unhae Kwon. She has won many awards at various music competitions. This her first season as a member of the GYO.
