The following local residents were recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society: Rebecca McKim of Glendalewas initiated at Boise State University; Angela Oh of La Crescenta was initiated at University of Southern California; Mark DeFond of La Cañada was initiated at University of Southern California; Edith Montemayor Angel of Tujunga was initiated at University of Southern California; Georgi Kobalyan of Montrose was initiated at University of Southern California; and Elizabeth Schmidt of Glendale was initiated at University of Southern California.

These residents are among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10% of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Danika C. Christensen of La Cañada graduated from Clemson University in South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biological sciences.

Christensen was among 3,600 students who received degrees at the May 9-10 ceremonies at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Lehigh University students Sophie Champ and Corey Loevinger, both from La Cañada Flintridge, earned a spot on the dean’s list in spring 2019. This status is granted to students who earned a scholastic average of 3.6 or better while carrying at least 12 hours of regularly graded courses.

For more than 150 years, Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania has combined academic and learning opportunities with leadership in fostering innovative research. The institution is among the nation’s most selective, highly ranked private research universities.

Elizabeth Crotty from Glendale was recently named to the dean’s list at the College of William & Mary for the spring 2019 semester.

In order to achieve dean’s list status, a full-time degree seeking undergraduate student must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a 3.6 Quality Point Average during the semester.

William & Mary is the second oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.

The following La Cañada Flintridge residents will be graduating in June from Oregon State University: Emile F. Chol, Bachelor of Science, sociology; Daniel F. Boreham, Bachelor of Science, mechanical engineering; Ian A. Morelan, Doctor of Philosophy, molecular and cellular biology; Lucy Newcombe, Bachelor of Science, human development and family sciences.

Endicott College held its 79th annual commencement exercises on May 25 at Hempstead Stadium on the Endicott campus in Beverly, Massachusetts.

Danielle Comorre graduated with a Bachelor of Science in bioengineering. Comorre’s parents are Dan Comorre and Estelita Comorre of Tujunga.

Min Ji Jang of La Cañada Flintridge earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut.

Lacy Coan from La Cañada Flintridge recently graduated from the College of William & Mary with a Bachelors of Business Administration degree.

Founded by royal charter in 1693, William & Mary is the second oldest educational institution in the nation.

Ani Aghakhanian of La Crescenta graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice from Saint Francis University during the May 12 commencement.

Aghakhanian was among more than 700 students who received degrees.

Lillian Lugosi of La Cañada Flintridge graduated from Troy University in Alabama during the spring semester/term 4 of the 2018-19 academic year. Lugosi graduated with a Bachelor of Science in nursing.

Troy University is a public, historic, international university with 22,500 students and 154,000 alumni.

Henry Richard Harris of La Crescenta was awarded a juris doctor degree from the University of Alabama School of Law in May. Harris was awarded a full-tuition scholarship and while at the University of Alabama was the lead editor of The Journal of the Legal Profession, was a member of the John A. Campbell Moot Court Board, and competed on the National Tax Moot Court Team. Harris will practice in Birmingham, Alabama at a firm specializing in commercial litigation, real estate, bankruptcy, collection and estate planning. A 2008 graduate of St. Francis High School in La Cañada and a 2012 graduate of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, Harris is the son of George and Robin Harris of La Crescenta.

Walter Anthony Harris of La Crescenta graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut at its 138th commencement ceremony in May. Harris, a management major, graduated with highest honors. He was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society for the top 5% of business schools around the world.

While at the Academy, Harris was a four-year varsity baseball starting pitcher. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the USCG Eagle, trained upon cutters in Mississippi and California, and earned his 100 gross ton merchant mariners license.

Harris received his commission as an ensign, and will serve aboard the USCG Daniel Tarr in Galveston, Texas.

Harris is a 2015 graduate of Maranatha High School in Pasadena and is the son of George and Robin Harris of La Crescenta.

Nearly 1,500 undergraduate students were awarded degrees in disciplines ranging from the sciences and engineering to the humanities and fine arts during Tufts University’s annual commencement. The graduates from the School of Arts and Sciences and School of Engineering included: Kevin Sung of La Cañada Flintridge with a degree in international relations (BA), summa cum laude, Olivia Markowitz of La Cañada Flintridge with a degree in art history (BA), cum laude and Ryan Newquist of La Cañada Flintridge with a degree in international relations (BA), cum laude.

Tufts University, located on campuses in Boston, Medford/Somerville and Grafton, Massachusetts, and in Talloires, France, is recognized among the premier research universities in the United States.

Ripon College has announced its dean’s list for the spring 2019 semester, recognizing academic excellence. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must achieve a 3.40 grade point average or higher on a 4.00 scale and complete at least 12 credits of regular letter-graded work.

James DeRose, class of 2021 from La Cañada Flintridge who is studying communication and exercise science – sports management, has been named to the spring 2019 dean’s list. DeRose is the child of James and Patricia DeRose IV from La Cañada Flintridge.
