La Cañada Presbyterian Church is holding a “Tacos & Tunes” benefit concert on Tuesday, July 12 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The concert will feature award-wining vocalist and children’s television host Mary Rice Hopkins along with “Puppets with a Heart” by Darcie Maze. The concert, with free tacos donated by Los Gringos Restaurant of La Cañada, will raise money through a free will offering at the concert to support the church’s youth going to Kenya this summer with Discover the World, an organization supporting orphanges in Kenya.

With a heart for children’s issues, singer-songwriter-guitarist Mary Rice Hopkins has been in the music industry for over 30 years and has more than 20 albums. Puppeteer Darcie Maze is best known for designing her own distinctive line of puppets with hearts. Together, they have a television show, “Mary Rice Hopkins and Puppet with a Heart,” which can be seen Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m.

Discover the World was founded in 1989 by Drs. Doug and Jackie Millham. It is a Christian, non-profit relief and development agency that rescues abandoned babies, provides safe homes and education for young children and adolescents and funds college attendance and vocational training programs for young adults. Currently, Discover the World serves 300 children in Kenya by providing safety, food, education and compassionate care in the midst of their difficult circumstances.

Since 2003, a wide variety of groups across La Cañada have supported Pasadena-based Discover the World, making a way for nearly 200 high school and college students and adults to visit projects in Kenya and serve as short-term volunteers. This year, a group of 22 students sponsored by La Cañada Presbyterian Church and led by La Cañada resident Christa Peitzman will be volunteering in Kenya the first two weeks of August.

Admission to the concert is free; an opportunity to make a donation will be available.
