It’s not too late to support Prom Plus in 2013! This weekend will see fundraisers in the Crescenta Valley to support the organization, which gives high school seniors a safe place to go after prom: an overnight party at the YMCA.
Now in its 20th year, Prom Plus holds many fundraisers throughout the year to raise about $25,000 for the prom night event. Among them are the annual Holiday Home Tour and Holiday Boutique that take place on Saturday.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Holiday Home Tour gives ticketholders the opportunity to visit homes whose halls are decked out in holiday splendor. Among this year’s tour destinations is Rockhaven Sanitarium, a facility for mentally ill women, which was in operation from the 1920s until 2006. It is now open to the public by special engagement only, such as the Holiday Home Tour. Prom Plus members will be on hand to assist with tours given by historian Mike Lawler and Rockhaven docents. Historical portrayals of some of the people involved with the operations of the sanitarium in its heyday will also be on-site. Tickets are $25 for the tour and can be purchased at several places around town, including the UPS stores in La Crescenta, Montrose and Glendale; the office of CV Weekly at 3800 La Crescenta Ave. #101; CV High School; the Crescenta Valley and Montrose chambers of commerce; J’s Maintenance; online at glendalearts.org and on the day of the event at the properties or the boutique.
The Holiday Boutique at 2563 Foothill Blvd. also takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free to attend. It features many artisans, crafters and merchants selling their gifts together in one place: the courtyard of St. Luke’s of the Mountains church at the corner of Rosemont and Foothill. The boutique will offer a wide range of items, from hand made jewelry to sculpted bowls to custom designed sweaters to comic books. There will also be an opportunity drawing. For a $1 ticket, shoppers will have the chance to win prizes, such as a catered meal from Frank’s Famous Kitchen and Bakery, among many others.
Baked goods from Berolina Bakery will also be on sale at the boutique.
