If it’s summer, it must be time for administration positions to switch within the Glendale Unified School District. Less than a month after it was announced Bill Card would be leaving Lincoln Elementary, the school has its new principal.
Stephen Williams, who will leave Franklin Magnet Elementary as principal, will take over Lincoln as Card leaves to take the same job at Toll Elementary. The Toll principal job became open when Paula Nelson left for another position within GUSD.
The announcement came late last month, and on June 28, Card issued a statement to the parents of Lincoln:
“I am pleased to announce that Stephen Williams will be our next Lincoln principal. Steve brings with him a wealth of experience and cares deeply about students and their families. He began his career as an educator as an elementary teacher in the District in 1988. He became a Teacher Specialist at Franklin 1994 and Assistant Principal at Horace Mann Elementary in 2006. He has been serving at the Principal of Franklin Elementary since 2007. I know that you will join me in welcoming Steve Williams to Lincoln.”
Card, who started out in GUSD as Crescenta Valley High’s band director in 1979, had been principal at Lincoln since September 2006.
“He’s done an outstanding job at Lincoln,” said Dr. John Garcia, deputy superintendent. “We believe he will continue to do an outstanding job and will move Toll forward.”
As for Williams, Garcia said, “He’s done an outstanding job at Franklin. He really collaborated well with staff and the community.” Garcia also praised Williams’ demeanor with his students.
Card was popular with parents, many who thought he was perfect for the Lincoln job. They were surprised at the announcement that he would be leaving.
“I can’t say what the parents will be feeling, but I feel they will embrace Mr. Williams just like they did Mr. Card five years ago,” Garcia said.
