I can’t believe that it is already time for Crescenta Valley High School’s prom. If you’re out and about early this Saturday night, no doubt you’ll be seeing some of CV’s finest youth dressed “to the nines” and ready to head to the Ronald Reagan Library where this year’s prom is being held.
I remember when my boys attended prom. It was exciting for me to see them all dressed up and looking like the men they were becoming. But before I became melancholy, I drew strength knowing that in just a few hours I would be seeing them at the Crescenta Cañada Y for Prom Plus.
Prom Plus – the after-prom event for CVHS seniors and their guests – has been taking place since 1994 and evolved from the murder of one our CV seniors at an unsupervised post-prom hotel party. Now, 22 years later, Berlyn Cosman’s legacy is one that her family should be proud of.
One thing I’m particularly proud of is the response by this community to a call for help. From money to food to manpower, this year’s Prom Plus has come up short. Perhaps it is due to the event being moved up a week from previous years (historically Prom Plus is held the Saturday/Sunday of the Memorial Day weekend). But whatever the reason, our community has let us PP organizers know that this event is important to them. Financial donations are still being received that will help offset the $20,000 it costs to host the event. Local restaurants are stepping forward to donate pasta, pizza and fruit. Bent at Los Gringos Locos has been a long-time supporter, supplying us for years with all the fixin’s for dozens of quesadillas. The vets from the American Legion and VFW have committed to being at the Y at 5 a.m. to oversee clean up. The CV Chamber of Commerce passed an envelope at this week’s meeting that raised several hundred dollars for Saturday’s event.
I have to share that sometimes I, probably like most of you, do things that I feel are important but question whether anyone notices or even cares. But after speaking to the graduating class at CV on Tuesday morning and hearing their enthusiastic hoots regarding Prom Plus and then receiving such an outpouring of support by foothill residents and businesses, I know that Prom Plus is as important to all of them as it is to me and the PP crew.
Thank you all!
One thing that is so important to the “shoppers” for Prom Plus is finding a good deal. So you can bet that I’ll be cutting out the coupon from the Gelson’s ad on this page and heading to La Cañada. I appreciate the quality of products at Gelson’s and, with this coupon, I’ll be able to get the best … for less! Perfect timing.
