Scholarships, Candidates on CVTC Agenda
Tonight, Thursday, May 19, Kathryn Barger, candidate for the Board of Supervisors 5th District, will speak at the CV Town Council Meeting about issues important to the Crescenta Valley.
The CV Town Council will also be awarding scholarships to the youth of our community. All are invited in recognizing these students’ accomplishments.
Also on the agenda is a presentation by CV Fire Safe, whose goal is to minimize damage from wildfires in the areas adjacent to wildlife areas, and an update by Glendale Unified School District on the summer construction occurring at La Crescenta, Lincoln and Fremont elementary schools and Crescenta Valley High School.
All are invited to attend the Town Council meeting beginning at 7 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library community room, 2809 Foothill Blvd.

Rosemont Preserve Open Gate Afternoon
An “open gate” event is taking place at the Rosemont Preserve on Sunday afternoon, May 22. This is a chance for residents to visit the Preserve and wander the trail at their own pace and enjoy the tranquil setting, the wildlife and the natural beauty. Photographers: bring your camera to capture the late afternoon light.
The gate will be open from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Friends of the Rosemont Preserve Committee members will be available to answer questions and present this community resource.
The Preserve is located at the north end of Rosemont Avenue, just past the chain link fence. As street parking is limited, please park at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave. Those planning on walking the trails should wear sturdy shoes.
This event is free to the public and suitable for all ages; no reservations required. Rain cancels. Sorry, no pets please.

‘Swingin’ Salute’ Cancelled
The “Swingin’ Salute,” scheduled for May 21 at 6 p.m. at the La Crescenta Woman’s Club has been cancelled.

Car Show on Saturday
American Legion Post 288 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1614 will host a car show on Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Crescenta Valley Park, 3901 Dunsmore Ave. in La Crescenta. Proceeds dedicated to military and children’s charities.
The show will feature classic automobiles, hot rods, military and emergency vehicles. There will be fire, police and search & rescue personnel and vehicles. There will be a live band, Band Inferno, playing old time rock ‘n roll, and food trucks and vendors. A kid’s clinic will be hosted by Home Depot. A silent auction will be held during the event with food and gift certificates for local restaurants and retailers. Admission to the event is free. Auto show participants may pre-register for $25 or register on the day of the show for $30. Trophies and dash plaques will be awarded.
There will be free coffee and donuts for all veterans. A Hometown Hero’s Garden will salute local veterans currently on active duty. A special display will be on-scene by the Legion Riders and Bikers Against Child Abuse.
Special guest speaker is Captain Gerald L. Peterson, U.S. Navy, Retired.

Closures Announced for Foothill Freeway
The California Dept. of Transportation (Caltrans) will close portions of the Foothill Freeway (I-210) as part of a pavement rehabilitation project. Residents and local businesses located near the freeway may experience noise, vibrations and dust associated with construction activities. Noise levels will not exceed state and federal regulations. Water trucks will be used to minimize dust during working hours. Nightly closures will take place through tonight, Thursday, May 19 on the eastbound I-210 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and affect up to three lanes between Lowell Avenue and Lake Avenue; from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the eastbound I-210 connector to southbound SR-2; from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. at Lowell Avenue, La Crescenta Avenue and Ocean View Boulevard on-ramps, Pennsylvania Avenue on- and off-ramps; westbound I-210 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. up to three lanes will be affected between Lowell Avenue and Lake Avenue.

Orchestra Performs Annual Spring Concert
The Glendale College Community Orchestra, conducted by Beth Pflueger, will perform in concert on Sunday, May 22 in the Auditorium at 3 p.m. It is a full orchestra with complete woodwind, brass, percussion and string sections. The program will include Poulenc’s “Gloria” performed with GCC’s Concert Singers, Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man,” “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun by Debussy” and Ravel’s “Bolero.”
Tickets are $10 for general admission and $7 for students and seniors. They may be purchased at the GCC box office before the performance or online at www.glendalearts.org.
