VIDEO: Search and Rescue Training

On a windy Saturday morning, helicopter pilots fought the breezes to take part in the Over the Side Rescue Drill. One of the exercises involved rappelling out of a helicopter to the ground below…

And then rescuers coming in and securing the volunteer “victim” to the line and reeling him back into the copter. This victim, Garrett Leum, caught a good breeze and some copter down draft, causing a pendulum swing and a quick spin around. Watch as he approaches the helicopter…


Another “victim” to be rescued, reporter Charly Shelton, had a camera accompany him throughout the rescue in real time. The video, shown below, has been sped up considerably to show the full rescue from beginning to end in a manageable video length. The rescue team was from Los Angeles County Fire Department.
