Troop 288 USS Midway Trek

On Oct. 7-8, a group of 40 scouts and leaders from local Boy Scout Troop 288 ventured south to experience a piece of history aboard the longest-serving American aircraft carrier of the 20th century, the USS Midway.

In addition to earning merit badges in either aviation or radio, the Scouts were immersed in the USS Midway’s “Mission Live It & Learn It” program that included eating in the galley, sleeping in the enlisted crew berths, exploring the flight deck under the stars, and learning to fly with Midway Flight Academy – each operating their own flight simulator.

An added, unexpected treat occurred on the flight deck when Retired Captain Rob Reed, in service dress whites because he was attending a comrade’s retirement ceremony, noticed the group of Troop 288 boys and asked one of the leaders if the boys would like to hear more about the F-14 aircraft. He had piloted the F-14 for many years and revealed that he had also been a Boy Scout who had earned the rank of Eagle.

He generously proceeded to give an in-depth explanation of the workings of the F-14. His wife, Retired Captain Patricia Reed, also shared some thrilling stories from their days of active service.

The Scouts from Troop 288 were even invited to hoist the La Crescenta Troop 288 flag on the flight deck for the duration of their “Mission Live It & Learn It” adventure!
