La Cañada Summer Success Fair, sponsored by Sports Chalet and hosted by Learning Ladder & Student Planning Services, had its inaugural launch on March 12 at the La Cañada Unified District Office campus. The event involved 25 community representatives from organizations and businesses in the local La Cañada area, united in an effort to present a “one-stop shop” for parents and families looking for a range of summer programs and volunteer opportunities for grades K-12.
Participants included Assistance League of Flintridge, Boy Scouts of America – Verdugo Hills, Catalina Island Camp, Child Educational Center, Community Center of La Cañada-Flintridge, Flintridge Bookstore and Coffee House, Foothill Chinese School, Foothill Hoops Basketball, Girl Scouts of America, La Cañada Flintridge Country Club, La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation Summer School, La Cañada Flintridge Scholarship Foundation, La Cañada Presbyterian Church Vacation Bible Camp, LA County Fire Dept., Learning Ladder, Lee Shin Tae Kwon Do, St. Bede Vacation Bible Camp, Special Olympics, Sports Chalet Scuba Classes, Student Planning Services, Tom Sawyer Camps, UCode and USC Verdugo Hills Hospital.
Attendees especially enjoyed the live Lee Shin Tae Kwon Do demonstration and free giveaways. Prizes totaling $5,000 were awarded in a raffle drawing and many vendors offered special discounts. The crowd sampled complimentary coffee from Don Francisco Coffee and dined on wood fired pizza by Ali-Catering. Los Angeles County Fire Dept. Station 82 was on hand to give tours of its engine and to promote its volunteer Explorer program for high school students. Community youth from St. Francis High School, La Cañada High School, and Crescenta Valley High School were out in force with volunteer efforts to setup and assist vendors.
