La Crescenta Valley Republican Women Federated is hosting a luncheon and presentation by Mark MacCarley, candidate for State Assembly 43rd district, today, Thursday, March 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

MacCarley was born, lived and worked in the 43rd district most of his life. He is an attorney, businessman, advocate for “at risk youth” and for mental health services. He joined the L.A. Sheriffs Dept. and is still a reserve patrol deputy who has 10 years with the Montrose Search & Rescue Team.

The club will also introduce Senator Bob Huff, candidate for L.A. County Supervisor, 5th District. Huff served as the Senate Minority Leader in the California State Senate from January 2012 through August 2015. He represents the 29th Senate District. He is an experienced businessman and an accomplished legislator who advocates for streamlining government regulations that strangle job creation.

“The Girls in the Band” chronicles the poignant stories of women who toured the U.S. from the 1920s through1940s in glamorous “all-girl“ bands. Many of them also played side-by-side with their male counterparts. The film had its theatrical release in 2013 and has won several film festival awards including the Palm Springs International Film Festival Audience Award.

After the screening special guests Judy Chaikin (director of the film) and Roz Cron, legendary 1940s saxophone player, will answer questions.

Join the Glendale Narrows Riverwalk volunteers on Saturday, March 12 from 8 a.m. to noon for the Riverwalk Workday. Help is needed for the maintenance of the landscaped areas along the trail. Participants should wear sturdy shoes, protective clothing including long pants, hat and sun protection. Those who have hand clippers and work gloves are asked to bring them along. Come to the next Little Landers Historical Society monthly program on March 12 at 1 p.m. at Bolton Hall and learn more about the German immigrant Furst family and the Castle they built high on a hill above their restaurant in Shadow Hills.

Speaker Don Ray is an investigative journalist who has researched the Furst family and their restaurant, the Old Vienna Café (Villa Cinzano) on Sunland Boulevard.  Come to this program and learn more about this local family accused of WWII espionage and what happened to them.

On Saturday, March 12 from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m., the Art Alliance of Idyllwild will be hosting one of its largest fundraisers of the year, Eye of the Artist. Art Alliance artists put their theme-inspired work forward and give attendees a chance to win a piece of original local art. This annual artists’ party helps raise funds for the nonprofit’s art events and education. With this year’s theme being Wild! it is certain to be a lively event with food and drink.

Ray United FC is challenging the community and their supporters to clean out their closets, hit up yard sales, and donate large black trash bags of their old, unwanted material textiles and clothing for the organization’s Stuff the Truck drive. The La Cañada Thursday Club Community Relations Committee is hosting “Fuel for Thought” – a program about hydrogen fuel cell cars – on Sunday, March 13 from 2 p.m.  to 4 p.m. at the Thursday Club. Cars from Hyundai, Mercedes and Toyota will be on display. The primary guest speaker is Lisa Mirisola, program supervisor for South Coast Air Quality Management District. Mirisola has worked in the Technology Advancement Office, where she has served as an AQMD project officer for technology demonstration projects in the areas of electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles and related vehicle regulatory analysis, infrastructure, incentive programs, and outreach efforts. Also speaking will be Keith Malone of California Fuel Cell Partnership, which is working to commercialize the next generation of vehicles, and Dr. Shane Stevens of First Element Fuel, Inc., provider of the fuel station in La Cañada.

The Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation will host its annual Ragtime Tea Dance on March 13 from noon to 5 p.m. The tea dance will feature musicians Ian Whitcomb, Sheila-Murphy Nelson and others. Pasadena Heritage Spring Home Tour is a drive-yourself tour featuring examples of Pasadena’s great architects and their private residences with experienced docents providing guided tours at each location. It takes place on Sunday, March 20 from

Home tour advance tickets are $40, $35 for members and $45 for everyone on the day of the tour.

Prior to the tour a lecture is being held on Tuesday, March 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. featuring Dennis Smith of the architectural firm of Buff, Smith and Hensman as well as noteworthy architectural historians will provide an overview of residential design that defines Pasadena’s architectural ancestry.

The 8th Annual Pasadena Festival of Women Authors will be held on Saturday, April 9 at the Pasadena Hilton Hotel from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The festival will feature Jane Smiley, author of the Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel, “A Thousand Acres,” and Kristin Hannah, author of the 2015 Goodreads Historical Fiction Choice Award winning novel, “The Nightingale,” as well as five other acclaimed authors – Cynthia Bond, Jan Ellison, Nayomi Munaweera, Victoria Patterson and Maggie Shipstead.

The Pasadena Festival of Women Authors brings together a group of diverse, well-published authors to discuss their work with enthusiastic readers whose love of literature inspired the event. The City of Glendale and the Library, Arts & Culture Dept. present the exhibition “Armenia: An Open Wound” in partnership with the Armenian American Museum. The exhibition will be on view at the Brand Library Art Galleries April 9-June 11 during the library’s regular hours: Tuesday and Thursday noon to 8 p.m., Wednesday noon to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A series of weekly programs will accompany the exhibition.

“Armenia: An Open Wound” debuted in Mexico City at the Museo Memoria Y Tolerancia [Museum of Tolerance] in April 2015 in honor of the Armenian Genocide centenary. The exhibition explores the intricate history of the Armenian people and creates an interactive experience by illustrating early Armenian culture; it shares the story of Armenian livelihoods on their ancestral lands, and prepares viewers to gain a deeper insight into the events that lead to the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
