Celebrate Book Lovers Day at Once Upon A Time
Did you know that tomorrow is National Book Lovers Day? There is nothing like the experience of going into a cozy bookstore, checking out what’s new, and purchasing a bound treasure to enjoy. The feel of a brand new book in hand, with crisp pages to turn, and perhaps the faint scent of ink, is even more appreciated in this high tech age.
Is it time for you to get a new book? I asked Maureen Palacios of Once Upon A Time bookstore (2207 Honolulu Ave.) what she would recommend. Of course this Montrose jewel has something for book lovers of all ages. An absolute must for new parents is “Better Baby Sleep” by Glendale parent and educator Jane Stockly, M.S. Your toddlers will enjoy having you read them “Good Night, Sleep Tight” by Mem Fox. For kids, there’s “Odd Duck” written by L.A.-based Cecil Castellucci and “How to Babysit a Grandpa” by Jean Reagan. Young readers will enjoy “The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp: by Kathy Appelt and “P.K. Pinkerton and the Petrified Man” by Caroline Lawrence.
Moving onto young adults: “Reboot” by Amy Tintera, the creepy but thrilling “5th Wave” by Rick Yancy, and “Starters” by Glendale’s own Lissa Price is now in paperback!
And for us real adults, Maureen’s hands down favorite read of 2013 is “Ordinary Grace” by William Kent Krueger. She also highly recommends “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed. (I hope you are paying attention because there is going to be a quiz later.)
Can you believe Once Upon a Time is in its 47th year in business! One of the many reasons they are loved are their unique special events. I highly recommend you check out their website www.shoponceuponatime.com and sign up for their e-newsletter so you don’t miss anything.
Maureen is very excited that their bestselling picture book “Fuddles,” by Glendale artist Frans Vischer, will soon have a sequel. “A Very Fuddles Christmas” is scheduled for a huge premier on Oct. 6 when the real, live Fuddles cat makes a return bookstore appearance. Also, “Gris Grimly’s Frankenstein” will be the focal point when filmmaker, storyteller and artist Grimly makes a rare appearance on Oct. 18. David Shannon and his newest book, “Bugs In My Hair,” will also be visiting the store in the fall.
Speaking of fall, the store will bid farewell to six staffers going off to colleges far away including Maureen’s daughters. Amelia is going to Macalester College in St. Paul Minnesota and Jessica returns to Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash. However, go and meet their newest booksellers, Meghan Arnold, Morgan Beck and Quentin Hill, who all grew up with Once Upon A Time.
Thanks for reading. Enjoy Book Lovers Day in Montrose!
