Supporters of the efforts to rebuild the war memorial at Two Strike Park were armed with daubers (markers) and a winning spirit on Friday, meeting at Holy Redeemer Healy Hall for a night of bingo.

The fundraiser was co-chaired by Andy Gero, Mike Baldwin and Lynn McGinnis from the American Legion Post 288 and VFW Post 1614. Jean Maluccio and the CV Chamber also lent support. The night hosted about 150 people who each paid a minimum of $10 for two bingo cards for 10 games. Additional pairs of cards cost $5. Pizza by the slice was available for purchase as was water and other refreshments.

The event raised more than was anticipated – over $5,000 after expenses – bringing the total to date of funds raised to $45,000 and that much closer to the $75,000 price tag for the war memorial project.

In attendance were community leaders including Crescenta Valley Town Councilmember Danette Erickson, Assemblymember Anthony Portantino, CV Chamber of Commerce advisor Jean Maluccio and chamber member Steve Pierce in addition to several veterans who were on hand to confirm the winning cards.

Denise Lenardson, who owns Pyramid Sleep Shop in La Crescenta, won back the $100 prize that she donated.

Event supporters were recognized midway through the evening with the distribution of certificates of appreciation. Bingo night was sponsored by the Crescenta Cañada Rotary, Crescenta Cañada Lions and Montrose La Crescenta Kiwanis. In addition, Mark and Cheryl Davis, Pyramid Sleep Shop, Intergal Engineering Services, Andy’s Transfer and Storage and Audio Advice sponsored individual games.

Whether a novice or an experienced player, all knew to zip their lips when the bingo numbers began to tumble. No one wanted to miss what could be their lucky numbers and the chance to win prize money of $100.

An opportunity drawing was also held. Local businesses donated the prizes that included a Kindle.

“All of the veterans are very appreciative of the generous supportive foothill community we call home,” said McGinnis. “With this fundraiser, we have passed $45,000 and the thermometers in the CV Weekly and on Rosemont Avenue reflect the new total.
