The Second Annual Chili Cook-Off was held on Saturday at the La Crescenta Library, sponsored by the Friends of the La Crescenta Library.
Twelve participants entered the competition, each bringing their own unique chili recipe. About 60 people attended, ready to judge each entry and name this year’s chili champion.
After the tasting was done and the votes counted, the crown was awarded to Broken Arrow Chili, with 53 votes. Prepared by husband and wife Chuck and Joanne Misetich, it was made with elk meat.
“It’s great,” said Chuck about placing first. “It’s our first time ever in a chili cook-off. We just came to have fun.”
Last year’s winner, Texas Chili, came in second with 49 votes. Robo Chili, prepared by CV High School’s robotics team, took third place with 48 votes.
“I decided to come back to defend my championship,” said Shawn Harris of his Texas Chili. “It was fun last year so I figured I’d come back this year.” He won a gift card to Trader Joe’s last year.
For their efforts, the Misetichs won a crown and a medal for first place. They were also given a choice of three other prizes. The first choice was a picnic bag complete with dishware, a blueberry drink, a barbecue book and a $10 gift card to Ralphs. The second choice was a $25 gift card to Ralphs and three chili books.The third choice was the book “Decorate Life: Celebrations” and a $25 gift card to the Crescenta Valley Flower Mart.
The judges also came away winners leaving the competition with full stomachs and an appreciation for the hard work that went into each entry.
“The Robo Chili [is my favorite],” said Lucas Martos-Repath, 12. “I just like the even amount of spice and beans and meat.”
The favorite of Ian Regan, who started last year’s chili cook-off, was the recipe entered by librarian Marta Wiggins. “It’s got the perfect amount of spice and it’s just good,” he said. Wiggins’ chili was made of buffalo and deer meat.
Though she didn’t place in the top three, Wiggins was happy with the community event.
“It’s great fun,” said Wiggins.
