The Kiwanis Club of Montrose-La Crescenta with President Lynn McGinnis hosted its annual scholarship awards dinner on May 9. The Montrose-La Crescenta Kiwanis Foundation funds the scholarship program that awarded 11 scholarships, totaling $5800, to graduating high school seniors from Crescenta Valley and Clark Magnet high schools. This year’s awardees included Helen Mushegian who received the Alvena & Les Dobbings Memorial Scholarship; Anahit Khachatryant and Kristen Ampig who received Kiwanis Key Club scholarships; Porter Hansen and Amber Zadravecz who received Kiwanis Scouting scholarships; Kirk Wilson and Daniela Kim who received Norm Avril scholarships; Yae Rin Cho and Gloria Han who received JROTC scholarships; and Brenda Rocha Barrata and Margot Wollenweber who received Kiwanis Community College scholarships. In addition, Celeste Lau-Ch, the Kiwanis Educator of the Year, received a Distinguished Service Award for her work with the CVHS Key Club.
The Kiwanis Club of Montrose-La Crescenta supports the charters and activities of the Key Clubs at Crescenta Valley High School, Clark Magnet High School, Verdugo Hills High School, and Village Christian School, as well as the Builder’s Club of Rosemont Middle School, K-Kids of Pinewood Avenue Elementary, and five local girls and boys Scouting troops. Proceeds from fundraising projects throughout the year, including a quarterly Bingo night, help to fund community activities such as Prom Plus, the Wheelchair Division of the L.A. Marathon, the La Crescenta Library’s Children’s Section, the Montrose Christmas Parade, the Salvation Army Food Bank and the Firehouse youth center that is also supported by St. Luke’s Episcopal church.
