The La Crescenta Woman’s Club hosted members of Fire Station 63, the CV Sheriff’s Station and the Glendale Police K-9 Unit on May 11.
The personnel visited the Club after receiving proceeds from the March 26 LCWC fashion show which provided much needed equipment for both the fire station and the Detectives Unit of the Sheriff’s Station on Briggs Avenue.
Firefighters Nate De Luca, Matt Ramirez, Captain Steve Zermeno and Battalion Chief Michael Brown will be receiving a specific rescue tool that saws through cement and steel.
Detective Rodger Burt, who had represented the Sheriff’s Department at the LCWC fashion show, made a return visit with Sgt. Ray Harley to accept a check that will be used to purchase a large laser color copier, which is expected to increase productivity of the Detective Unit.
After the donations were presented,  Glendale Police Officer Aaron Hamilton, with his K-9 partner Quwai, demonstrated how the K-9 Unit operates. Officer J. A. San Miguel played the bad guy (protected by padding on his left arm). Quwai grabbed his arm and firmly held on, even while being swung around in the air. After the dog released San Miguel’s arm and sat down, Quwai continued to watch the man intently waiting to receive a command from Officer Hamilton and for the “perp” to raise both hands in the air.
Hamilton explained that Quwai, a German shepherd, was trained in Germany and exported to the U.S. Although they are attached to the Glendale Police Department, the dogs can be sent anywhere in L.A. county where they are needed.
Hamilton added that no tax money is spent for the K9 Unit.
