The City of Glendale Commission on the Status of Women invites the community to nominate outstanding women, students and veterans to be honored at the 10th Annual Jewels of Glendale Awards luncheon on Thursday, May 8 at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.
The Commission on the Status of Women is seeking nominations for the 2014 Jewels of Glendale: Women of Courage Award. The award serves to recognize, honor, and raise the visibility of outstanding Glendale women who have – through strength, courage, and persistence – overcome hardship of any sort (physical, financial or emotional) to become strong, positive role models for their community. Nominees must live, work, volunteer or study in Glendale. Organizations and individuals may submit up to two nominees; nominations are strongly encouraged from a wide range of fields. Posthumous nominations will be considered.
The Commission is also seeking nominations for the 2014 Gem of Glendale Award. One outstanding high school senior will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship during the May luncheon. The Gem of Glendale Award is a scholarship that will be awarded to one student (male or female) who is engaged in community service that reflects the core values and mission of the Commission on the Status of Women. The community service should include service to women and/or girls in areas such as: homelessness, health, leadership, and financial literacy. Educators and organizations are encouraged to nominate eligible students for this scholarship.
This year, for the first time, the Commission is also seeking nominations for the 2014 Gemstone of Glendale Award. One Glendale veteran will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship that can be used towards educational expenses (i.e. tuition, books, class materials). The Gemstone of Glendale is a scholarship that will be awarded to a veteran who is engaged in community service that reflects the core values and mission of the Commission and can demonstrate the need for the funds to overcome obstacles to achieve academic goals. Educators and organizations are encouraged to nominate eligible veterans, but individuals can also self nominate for this award.
The deadline to submit applications for the Jewels of Glendale: Women of Courage, Gem of Glendale and Gemstone of Glendale Awards is Sunday, Feb. 9 at 5 p.m.
Nomination packets can be found on the City of Glendale website, www.ci.glendale.ca.us/women. Interested parties may also call (818) 548-2000 or email email@example.com for more information or for sponsorship opportunities.
